Offsiter is a backup utility that compresses files and sends them as encrypted attachments to off-site e-mail accounts. Storing files away from your home or business premises is far more secure than relying on conventional archiving mechanisms such as CD-ROM, tapes, and hard drives, all of which are prone to theft, damage, or local "acts of God". You can use any e-mail account to store your files, including the free ones provided by Yahoo, Microsoft, and Google.

Offsiter can use archives created with any compression application. However, using Offsiter's own zip compression gives you the rare option to archive only those files that have changed since they were last backed up; in other words, to produce incremental backups and drastically reduce the size of subsequent archives.

When the archive is sent to an e-mail account, it is divided into separate e-mail attachments so that the provider's size limit for e-mails is not breached. Each attachment is strongly encrypted to prevent hackers from gaining access to your files by intercepting them during sending or by breaking into your e-mail account.

If you ever need to recover an archive, you simply download the attachments from your e-mail account and use Offsiter to decrypt and merge them to recreate the original archive.
